Swifties Rejoice! Lucy Dacus Breaks Silence on Being Name-Dropped in Tortured Poets Department

The indie rock star has revealed she’s the “Lucy” referenced in Taylor Swift’s emotionally charged title track, putting fan speculation about the lyric’s meaning to rest. In the song, Swift sings, “You told Lucy you’d kill yourself if I ever leave / And I had said that to Jack about you, so I felt seen.” Dacus confirmed to PEOPLE that Swift personally reached out for permission before including the reference, with the Boygenius member stating simply: *”It’s fair game to say ‘yes.'”

Dacus described the surreal experience of hearing Swift – now a friend rather than just a cultural icon – sing her name on the album. *”This voice that I’ve heard basically what feels like my whole waking life saying my name… It was definitely an experience,”* she shared, praising Swift’s vulnerability on the record. *”I don’t know how many people at her level, if anyone is at her level, are writing from the heart that openly.”*

The revelation comes as Dacus celebrates the release of her fourth solo album *Forever Is a Feeling*, featuring collaborations with Hozier, and prepares to embark on her largest headlining tour to date. Meanwhile, Swift continues her tradition of embedding personal references in lyrics for fans to decode – this time with confirmation straight from the source.

The interaction highlights the growing connections between mainstream pop and indie music circles, with Swift’s nod serving as both a personal tribute and career milestone for the rising rock artist.
