Actress Jaime King has lost primary custody of her two sons, James, 11, and Leo, 9, to her ex-husband, filmmaker Kyle Newman, following her failure to complete a court-ordered six-month rehab program. According to court documents obtained, Newman was granted sole physical custody, while the former couple will share legal custody. However, Newman has tie-breaking authority, giving him the final say in decisions if they disagree.
King, 45, was granted supervised visitation rights, allowing her to see her children three times a week during specific hours. Approved supervisors include her mother, sister, brother-in-law, and Newman’s brother. The restrictions stem from King’s failure to complete a six-month drug and alcohol program, which included weekly testing, aftercare, a 26-week parenting course, individual counseling, and conjoint counseling with her sons.
The custody decision follows Newman’s petition for sole custody, in which he accused King of being “strung out” and “drunk” while caring for their children. He also claimed King is a “chronic drug addict and alcoholic,” alleging she abused opiates before and during her pregnancies, which he said led to their younger son, Leo, being born addicted to opiates.
Newman further stated that King’s friends staged an intervention in 2020, prompting her to enter a Utah rehab facility. However, she reportedly checked herself out shortly after. Since then, the children have remained in Newman’s care.
The custody ruling marks a significant shift in the ongoing legal battle between King and Newman. While King retains some visitation rights, the decision underscores the court’s concerns about her ability to provide a stable environment for her sons.
