Prince Frederik of Nassau, the youngest son of Prince Robert and Princess Julie of Luxembourg, has passed away at the age of 22 after a courageous fight against POLG Mitochondrial disease, a rare genetic condition.
The illness, which depletes the body’s cells of energy, leads to progressive organ failure. Frederik was diagnosed with the condition at 14, and his father announced his passing in early March.
In a heartfelt statement, Prince Robert shared that Frederik spent his final moments surrounded by his family on February 28, coinciding with Rare Disease Day. “Our beloved son called us into his room to say goodbye,” Prince Robert said.
“With incredible strength and courage, Frederik gave each of us a personal farewell some kind, some wise, and some instructive. True to his nature, he left us with a final family joke, ensuring we shared one last laugh.”
Prince Robert described his son as a beacon of humor and compassion, even in his final moments. “His boundless love and wit stayed with him until the end,” he added.
Frederik is survived by his parents, Prince Robert and Princess Julie; his siblings, Alexander and Charlotte; his cousins, Charly, Louis, and Donall; his brother-in-law, Mansour; and his aunt and uncle, Charlotte and Mark.
