The music industry is reeling from the devastating loss of Angie Stone, the Grammy-nominated singer and R&B icon, who tragically passed away in a fatal car accident on Interstate 65 near Montgomery, Alabama.

The incident occurred as Stone and her band were traveling from Mobile, Alabama, to Atlanta following a performance at a Mardi Gras event.

According to Lt. Jeremy Burkett of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the van carrying Stone and her band members, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, flipped over on the highway before colliding with a semi-truck. Stone, who was a passenger in the van, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eight other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Stone’s sudden death has left her family, friends, and fans in shock. Her children, Diamond Stone and Michael Archer, released a heartfelt statement through her label, the SRG-ILS Group, expressing their profound grief. “Never in a million years did we expect to receive such heartbreaking news.

Our mom was and will always be our everything. We are still trying to process this unimaginable loss and are completely heartbroken,” they shared.

Angie Stone’s career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry. She first rose to prominence in the late 1970s as a member of the pioneering female rap group The Sequence, which helped define early Southern rap with hits like Monster Jam.

Stone later embarked on a successful solo career, delivering timeless R&B classics such as Wish I Didn’t Miss You and Brotha, a heartfelt tribute to Black men.

Her versatility as an artist extended beyond music. Stone was also a member of the R&B trio Vertical Hold and collaborated with legendary artists like D’Angelo, Prince, and Macy Gray.

In addition to her musical achievements, she showcased her acting talents in films like The Hot Chick and Broadway productions such as Chicago.

Fans and fellow artists flooded social media with tributes, celebrating Stone’s contributions to R&B, soul, and hip-hop.

Many highlighted her iconic theme song for the TV show Girlfriends and her ability to connect with audiences through her powerful voice and heartfelt lyrics.

The Mobile-Area Mardi Gras Association, where Stone had performed just hours before the accident, also paid tribute to the late singer. “Angie’s performance at the 2025 Grand Marshal’s Ball was nothing short of phenomenal.

We were truly saddened to hear of her passing, and our hearts go out to her family and loved ones,” the group wrote on Facebook.
