Actor Eric Dane has shared his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in an emotional statement to PEOPLE.
The Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria star, 51, expressed gratitude for his family’s support as he faces this health challenge, saying: “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
Despite the progressive neurodegenerative condition that affects nerve cells and muscle control, Dane remains committed to his craft. He confirmed he’ll begin filming the new season of HBO’s “Euphoria” next week as production starts Monday.
The diagnosis comes amid significant personal developments – his wife Rebecca Gayheart recently moved to dismiss their 2018 divorce petition after 14 years of marriage.
ALS, which currently has no cure, progressively weakens muscles and impacts physical function. Dane’s decision to continue working highlights his determination as he manages the condition.
The actor is best known for his roles as Dr. Mark Sloan on “Grey’s Anatomy” and Cal Jacobs on “Euphoria,” with his health update arriving just as the teen drama prepares to resume filming after delays.
