Benny Blanco recently shared that his fiancée, Selena Gomez, wasn’t in the best mood just hours before he proposed to her. During the March 20 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Blanco, 37, and Gomez, 32, opened up about the surprise engagement. Gomez admitted she had no idea what was coming and that the proposal completely turned her day around.
Gomez explained that she had been busy promoting her album and was feeling tired and grumpy that morning. “I woke up confused about where we were going because it seemed far,” she said. “I told Benny, ‘After this shoot, I’m going to hang out with my friends.’ He just kept saying, ‘Okay, we’ll see.’”
Blanco added, “She almost didn’t come! She said, ‘I don’t feel well. Can’t we reschedule the shoot?’ I was panicking, trying to figure out how to keep her from canceling.”
Blanco also joked about the pressure of proposing, saying, “It’s the craziest thing. Right before you tell someone you want to marry them, you’re basically lying to them. She was mad at me because the day before, I was making up bad excuses.”
The couple announced their engagement in December 2024 after dating for a little over a year. Blanco proposed during a romantic picnic that included Gomez’s favorite—Taco Bell.
Photos shared on Instagram showed off her stunning oval-shaped ring with a large marquise diamond. Blanco revealed to Fallon that he kept the six-carat ring hidden in a bag he thought no one would look through, calling it “the scariest week of my life.”
When asked about wedding plans, the couple said they’re currently focused on their first collaborative album, I Said I Love You First, which drops on March 21. “We’re not planning anything yet, but we want to make sure the music is good,” Blanco said.
Earlier in the week, the couple made a surprise appearance at a New York City screening of Gomez’s 2013 film, Spring Breakers. After the movie, they treated the audience to a preview of their new song, “Bluest Flame.”
