South Korean singer Wheesung, celebrated for his soulful voice and emotional performances, was found dead at his Seoul residence on Monday. He was 43 years old.
According to police, Wheesung was discovered unconscious in his apartment after his mother, who lives in the same building, became concerned when she couldn’t reach him.
She alerted emergency responders, who arrived at the scene at 6:29 p.m. Despite their efforts, Wheesung was pronounced dead.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of death but confirmed there were no signs of foul play.
Wheesung’s management agency, Tajoy Entertainment, released a statement expressing their grief. “Artist Wheesung has left us.
He was found in cardiac arrest at his residence and was later pronounced dead,” the agency said. “We are deeply sorrowful and ask for privacy during this difficult time.”
Wheesung, whose real name is Choi Whee-sung, debuted in 2002 and quickly rose to fame with his powerful vocals and heartfelt lyrics.
Over the years, he became one of South Korea’s most beloved R&B and soul artists, releasing numerous hit songs that resonated with fans.
However, his career faced challenges in 2021 when he was convicted of habitual propofol use, a sedative often misused recreationally.
He received a one-year prison sentence, which was suspended for two years. Despite this setback, Wheesung continued to pursue his passion for music.
At the time of his passing, Wheesung had been preparing for a performance alongside singer KCM in the southeastern city of Daegu, scheduled for Saturday.
His sudden death has left fans and the music industry in shock, with many mourning the loss of a talented artist whose voice touched countless lives.
As the investigation into his death continues, Wheesung’s legacy as a gifted musician and performer will undoubtedly live on through his music.
